Powerful Earthquake Rocks Southern Philippines — Tsunami Alert Issued, Damage Reported

A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Manay, Davao Oriental, in southern Philippines on Friday morning, prompting tsunami warnings, evacuation orders, and reports of damage to hospitals, schools, and infrastructure. This seismic event comes just days after another devastating earthquake in Cebu rattled the Philippines on September 30, 2025, which measured magnitude 6.9 and killed over 70 people, making it the deadliest quake in the country in years.

⚠️ Casualties & Damage

Preliminary reports confirm at least 2 fatalities, as houses collapsed in Davao Oriental. In several towns, structural damage was observed: hospitals, schools, and public infrastructure sustained cracks or partial collapses. In Davao City, a hospital evacuated around 250 patients due to safety concerns. Dozens of students were also hospitalised after fainting or suffering from shock during the tremor.

Power outages were reported, and residents in coastal areas were ordered to evacuate to higher ground as a precaution while authorities assessed the damage.

🛠️ Response, Rescue & Government Actions

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced that assessments are underway and pledged to deploy search-and-rescue teams once conditions allow. Authorities are also coordinating with local agencies to clear debris, check for structural safety, and restore critical services.

Coastal towns in Surigao del Sur and surrounding provinces were placed on alert. Some small tsunami waves (~0.3 m) were recorded along portions of the Philippine coast, though the broader tsunami threat was later downgraded.

Schools in affected areas, including parts of Davao City, were temporarily suspended to allow damage inspections.

🔎 Context & Aftermath

This quake arrived soon after a magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck Cebu / Central Visayas on September 30, killing dozens and leaving homes destroyed. The Philippines, located on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, remains highly vulnerable to seismic activity.

Officials warn of aftershocks and urge residents to stay away from damaged buildings and unstable terrain. Relief operations have begun, with emergency supplies and medical teams being mobilized.
